Erie County

Hotel Lodging Tax

The Erie County Commissioners have amended the 4% hotel lodging tax regulation to include ALL establishments (hotels and rental homes) renting one or more rooms for less than 30 days (including properties advertised with agencies such as Airbnb & VRBO).

Due to these changes, effective 1/1/19, the Erie County Auditor’s Office will be hosting training sessions for all hotels and transient rental owners to demonstrate the new Local Gov software that will be used to report and pay the tax. We encourage your attendance at one of the sessions to register on the new software and to answer questions you may have.

  • Wednesday, December 12th
  • 10am – Noon or 2pm – 4pm
  • Erie County Office Building – 247 Columbus Ave – 3rd Floor

  • Please register at

Additional information can be found on the Auditor’s website at If you have questions, please call Heather at the Auditor’s Office at (419)627-7743.

All people/hotels who rent houses, rooms, and such will be required to register with us, fill out a quarterly tax form that lists their amount of rents for that period of time and pay 4% of their rents to Erie County.

Your local government such as the City of Sandusky, Kelleys Island and such could also enact their own tax up to 3% and charge you that as well. More information will be available later this year on our website. We are in process of setting up the process and tax forms. We are also waiting for the other local government entities to evaluate their taxing options.
